One of the most common questions we receive is whether Labret tops can be used with Dermal Anchors. Many customers already have a Dermal base and simply want to replace the decorative top, but compatibility is not always as straightforward as it seems.

In many cases, Labret tops can be used on a Dermal Anchor. However, before purchasing a new top, it is essential to verify the thread size of your existing base.

What Is a Dermal Anchor?

A Dermal Anchor, often referred to as a Micro Dermal, consists of a base and a removable decorative top.

The base is placed beneath the skin by a professional, while the visible top can be replaced with different designs, gemstones or decorative pieces. This allows wearers to change the appearance of their jewelry without replacing the entire anchor.

The most common Dermal base sizes are 1.2 mm and 1.6 mm.

Can Labret Tops Be Used on a Dermal Anchor?

In many cases, yes.

Many Labret tops use the same connection system found on Dermal Anchors. However, compatibility depends on the thread size rather than the appearance of the jewelry.

Two decorative tops may look identical but still be incompatible if their thread specifications are different.

For this reason, checking the thread dimensions before purchasing is always recommended.

Thread Specifications Used in Our Jewelry

Unless otherwise stated on the product page, our internally threaded Labret jewelry uses a 1.2 mm bar gauge.

It is important to note that thread dimensions vary depending on the material.

When we refer to the thread, we mean the screw located on the back of the decorative top that connects it to the bar or Dermal base.

For 316L surgical steel jewelry, the thread size is typically 1.0 mm.

For G23 ASTM F136-13 implant-grade titanium jewelry, the thread size is typically 0.9 mm.

Although the difference appears small, a variation of only 0.1 mm is enough to affect compatibility.

How to Check Whether Your Dermal Is Compatible

The easiest way is to contact the professional who originally installed your Dermal Anchor.

They can usually tell you both the size of the base and the thread specifications.

For example, if your Dermal base has an outer diameter of 1.2 mm and an internal thread size of 0.9 mm, it will generally be compatible with all of our internally threaded titanium Labret tops.

If your Dermal base uses a 1.6 mm system, you should select products specifically marked as:

"For 1.6 mm threaded bars"

Only these products are designed to fit 1.6 mm systems correctly.

What Information Should You Check Before Buying?

Before purchasing a new Dermal top, we recommend confirming the size of your base, the type of threading used and the actual thread dimensions.

If you are unsure, consult your piercer or contact our customer support team with the specifications of your Dermal Anchor.
